In a bold and satirical Easter-themed cold open, Saturday Night Live (SNL) portrayed former President Donald Trump as Jesus Christ, drawing parallels between Trump’s legal challenges and the persecution of Jesus. The sketch featured cast member James Austin Johnson impersonating Trump, who interrupted a reenactment of the Last Supper to compare his own experiences to those of Jesus.
Johnson’s Trump character quipped, “A famous, wonderful man arrested for no reason at all. If you haven’t put it together, folks, I’m comparing myself to Jesus again.” He went on to claim that his persecution was worse than that of Jesus, stating, “I am being persecuted on a level the likes of which the world has never seen, even worse than the late, great Jesus.”
The sketch also mocked Trump’s recent promotion of a $60 “God Bless the USA” Bible, with Johnson’s Trump declaring, “I’m doing this for the glory of God and for pandering and mostly for money.”
SNL’s cold open was part of an episode hosted by Jon Hamm, featuring musical guest Lizzo. The show continued its tradition of blending political satire with current events, using humor to comment on Trump’s actions and public persona.
The sketch received widespread attention, with viewers and critics noting its sharp commentary and comedic portrayal of Trump’s self-aggrandizement. By juxtaposing Trump’s legal troubles with religious imagery, SNL delivered a provocative and timely satire that resonated with audiences.
